[OK] BBQ Arrogance: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Unread post by machinebacon » Tue Aug 20, 2013 11:45 am

Fellow roasters and potheads,

the package xserver-xorg-video-intel is on the removal if you perform a full dist-upgrade today. Please delay for a few days, even if you don't run an Intel video card. Something is fishy upstream.

So this warning only applies for the releases that have GIMP and Inkscape. Users of these releases can do the following:

Code: Select all

sudo nano /etc/apt/preferences.d/10siduction
and change the priority to 100. Save and exit, and sudo apt-get dist-upgrade again. If you still want to have siduction's experimental pinned higher (for newer packages of software that is not in Debian's repos), switch back to 1000.

^ lol
The really fishy thing is that it wants to downgrade a bunch of stuff that are rdepends of xorg.

Does not happen here. Maybe the storm already moved. No video driver upgrades nor removals.

Not happening here either. dist-upgraded hubby, proof, and a netinstall with no problems. Got some upgrades to video packages, but no attempted removals.

(edit) I did just see this at the end of my Athlon box upgrade:

Code: Select all

grave bugs of xserver-xorg-video-radeon (1:6.14.4-8 -> 1:7.2.0-1) <unfixed>
#720329 - xserver-xorg-video-radeon: Screen keeping black at start but for the cursor
But I just checked the bug, and it looks like the person who reported it did not have KMS enabled, so it will probably be closed soon.

Okay, thanks.

Code: Select all

The following packages will be REMOVED:
  xserver-xorg-video-intel
[...]
The following packages will be DOWNGRADED:
  distro-defaults libpixman-1-0 x11proto-input-dev
So if somebody sees this, retry to "upg" a day later. I mark it as [OK]

Seems the downgraded packages are taken from Siduction experimental (lower version number), gotta play with the apt preferences to see if there's a link.

I used to pin All the time back in the late 90s and early 2s
Now, I have abandoned the practice (practise)
The last thing that I saw pinned was a Wrestler named "Killer Kowalski"
and all is well for over 10 yrs stable, testing and Sid..

Can we stay on topic in the upgrade warning section? Thank you.

"Something is fishy upstream." - Machinebacon

What is fishy upstream is a planned transition of xorg. It is not nearly complete. What bugs me is, why do they release parts of it when other required parts are not ready yet?

The "fishy" comment was a few weeks ago, and Arrogance was hit earlier than other releases because of the hard experimental 'pinning'. Yes, it's a good question, though - Siduction is really nice and sets packages on hold, with a little delay (1-2 days) though.

Unfortunately that is the nature of Sid. Look at Gnome 3.8 for example, a mess. The Debian way...

This move appears to be complete enough for successful dist-upgrades now. I'm locking the topic.
