Steam heads up

Unread post by kexolino » Wed Sep 18, 2013 5:06 pm

Here in the dark lands of Arch, Steam was broken for quite a few days (as in, it didn't launch) after it ran its own update (ofc might have been something else too), but I also saw some people running Wheezy complain, so I thought this problem must be present in Sid too...
It sometimes can be started once if you delete your ~/.steam, but not always, so here's the fix that worked for me:

Code: Select all

steam --reset
and just wait for the update to finish, then log in (your games are not gonna be deleted).
You might have to kill steam before this, if you already tried to launch it but failed.

As I just learned today, it is not that steam had a problem on sid updated, it is that steam has a problem running period on sid. Looking into it, games seem to be a bad choice for sid :P

It worked fine for me afterwards, on sid too, but tbh I haven't played anything other than NES games for a month now. but I'll try it out once I get home to see, although my guess would be it doesn't work for you because of radeon/fglrx...

It sometimes simply does not download the relevant files from the server. Can't say for sure, but after the License Agreement, it downloads only a part (a large part) and then times out IIRC. OK, this was weeks ago.

Yeah that is probably true. I actually did finally get Counter Strike: Source to run but it was a lot laggier than last time. There was mouse and input lag which sucked. It ran fine when I had crunchbang but I am just going to get over it.

You can dual-triple-...-boot, that is no problem :) You see, I have like 16 different distros listed in GRUB ;)

I just do not know what I should dual/triple/... boot. I am sort of the person where when I pick a WM or Distro I stay as dedicated as possible to it. So I will think about other distros, I might just get out of gaming in general xD
