Lightdm (grave bug)
Lightdm 1.8.3-1 will fuck with your Gnome session and it seems also with your Xfce session, maybe it will also insult your mother or girlfriend. Now you can see why we prefer to use startx.
So, if you use lightdm and you need it for your sessions, put it on hold, and just to be sure, lightdm-gtk-greeter, too. In the worst case, just downgrade to the older 1.6.3-1.

No problem on my "ENOUGH" install, LXDE/OpenBox.

Re: Lightdm (grave bug)
Oh yes, seems they pulled lightdm up to 1.8.3 but lightdm-gtk-greeter is still at 1.6.3 -- smells like a transition there (maybe for GTK3.8) so I echo ivan's suggestion for those who use XFCE and GNOME3 ;)
Interesting that LXDE is not affected. Maybe because it's now managed differently (lxsession got an upgrade a few weeks ago)

Re: Lightdm (grave bug)
There seems to be a workaround. If you are not using systemd, then remove the package libpam-systemd, I do not have it even installed.

Thanks for the investigation. I've checked and can confirm that
installing libpam-systemd breaks lightdm indeed.
I'll forward that information upstream and ask for advice on this.

I have experienced the same troubles with mounting drives, using
shutdown/restart etc... since lightdm upgrade to 1.8.
I have found that keeping libpam-systemd installed and running
pam-auth-update --force
then selecting only "Unix Authentication" solves the problem.
The previous solutions (removing libpam-systemd or commenting a line in
/etc/pam.d/common-session) also worked but created some troubles with
libGL (also authentication problems).
I hope it helps

Re: Lightdm (grave bug)
Confirmed. Lightdm in sid messed with my xfce session in Absinthe. Added a long delay to my boot and the shutdown/restart-options wasn`t at the login-page. Just a dead button. But I removed it, and manually downloaded and installed the deb-package of the version in Jessie(1.6.3-1). Works great, so for now I have put lightdm on hold...

Re: Lightdm (grave bug)
The correct fix is to totally remove lightdm...always, regardless of what the problem is.

Re: Lightdm (grave bug)
As I said, it works perfectly without libpam-systemd, just in case.
Re: Lightdm (grave bug)
Yes, that`s correct, but a well-configured lightdm login-page looks very cool, and besides, it makes the system usable for people that aren`t all that into Linux. Like my wife. I can`t present her with a system where she has to use a tty to login or switch users or sessions:)DebianJoe wrote:The correct fix is to totally remove lightdm...always, regardless of what the problem is.

Re: Lightdm (grave bug)
There's so little breakage recently in Sid (I don't remember it ever being so quiet like in the last 3-4 months), so let's derail the shit out of the forums :D
