Chrome has gone bfanananas(OK)

Unread post by vic » Mon Nov 04, 2013 10:14 am

FYI, dist-upgraded "Cookies", and "Pony Muncher". "Chrome" got some upgrades and now it has difficulties with displaying a lot of pages. The silliest thing with it is that when trying to go to the settings page it fails, and up comes this lead blue/grey page with "Aw.... if you got a problem with displaying... click on this link.." and guess what! Yes it does not succeed in showing that either. Quite a pity really, since I have become used to "Chrome" and started to like it. This is not a problem for me, I will just use "Iceweasel" in the meantime and see if/when the problem get an upgrade fix.

Correct, I wasn't sure if it affects only my installation, and googling/bugtracking didn't bring much -- the latest upgrade has completely "Aw, Snap"-ed it.

I dumped GoogleChrome, but Vic, could you open it, go to the wrench, Tools > "Report an issue" entry? At least they get a notification then. Thanks :)

Chromium is not affected, by the way.

Clicked on the "Report an issue", nothing happened, no reaction at all. Tried the "Sign in to Chrome"... but got
"Aw snap". So I will wait for a while and see if something positive happens, maybe I will try "Chromium":)

I got that also now with an upgrade yesterday(v30). I don't really use chromium enough to matter, but I guess its not just me. You can run this

Code: Select all

chromium --disable-setuid-sandbox &
don't know if any reprocussions or effects, but it does work.

Work hard; Complain less

Code: Select all

 policy chromium
chromium:
  Installed: 30.0.1599.101-1
  Candidate: 30.0.1599.101-2
I'm still with the -1 revision and it's OK. So, if somebody reads this and uses Chromium, make a check for version number and stay with 30.0.1599.101-1 or below.

It`s a good idea to hold back Chrome and Chromium. I`m doing it in my other installs and there everything works fine, but this time with Pony_muncher I went for the dist-upgrade without putting Chrome on hold. Bad idea, and installing Chromium will not help, because the newest version there also has the same issues. Only solution is actually to remove Chromium and install the last version. Then put it on hold with apt-mark: problem solved, at least for a while :)

Did you attempt the symlink as per G.Slob's post? It worked fine here on Chromium temporarily, and after the latest Chromium hit, the problem was corrected.

I have not tested on Chrome.

ew, which version, at least chromium, is a candidate for you? my reply above has included the latest available which does not have any issues, as DJ just stated. Latest should be 30.x.xxxx.xxx-3

policy chromium
chromium:
Installed: 30.0.1599.101-3
Candidate: 30.0.1599.101-3

Everything working fine here without manual masturbation as proposed above.

Confirmed "apt-mark BS is not needed" RSI:TINY:Elektra:Vanilla Sid....so probably not needed on any sid-tracking install.

I haven`t tried the new Chromium versions in my other installs, after they initially failed. So it might have been fixed. The one that I am using, is this one: 30.0.1599.101

But I installed Pony_Muncher yesterday, and the initial Chrome version worked fine, but the one I got after the dist-upgrade didn`t work. Therefore I didn`t take the chance of installing Chromium from unstable, as I need a working Chromium.

I`m also holding back other packages, like openbox for example, because I don`t like the new default window-placements. But I`m well aware that it`s the chickens way out :D

I`ll try the latest Chromium and see if it works for me this time. It takes just a minute or two to revert it if needed, so it`s no biggie if it fails.

Strange. I was in VSIDO, so I tried it there. I lifted the hold of chromium and installed the new version 3 without any error-messages, so it seemed to work fine. But Chromium itself say that it`s still version 1(About Chromium). Synaptic tells me that version 3 is installed. What to make of this?

What? What says:

Code: Select all

apt-cache policy chromium
If it is the newest from Unstable, then that's it, no more whining needed.
I guess it has then to be fixed with Chrome too, if not we still have to wait.

You could compare with:

Code: Select all

apt-cache policy chrome-stable (if that is the package name)

Code: Select all

ew@vsido-g580:~$ sudo apt-cache policy chromium
[sudo] password for ew:
chromium:
  Installed: 30.0.1599.101-3
  Candidate: 30.0.1599.101-3
  Version table:
 *** 30.0.1599.101-3 0
        200 http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ sid/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
ew@vsido-g580:~$

Well, perhaps I should stop whining, but "About Chromium" still tells me it`s version 1:
Version 30.0.1599.101 Debian jessie/sid (227552)

I have a hard time letting it go, lol. But what you are saying is that I have the correct version, but they somehow have forgotten to update whatever it is that reports the version to "About Chromium"? Ok, I`ll live with it for now, because now I`m going to install Absinthe and see if I like it enough to steal the spot from Pony_Muncher. One of the two will remain in my system, at least for a while :)
