Re: Kernel 3.13-0.towo-siduction
updating buffalo as we speak. Been awhile ... 195MB worth!
as an fyi, this is the same problem I was having with running the vanilla kernel in Colin.
* update - no go on Buffalo either *

dkeg, does udev start loading before or after KMS? What video hardware do you have? Do you see anything interesting in the dmesg log?
Re: Kernel 3.13-0.towo-siduction
Did some other investigations. Here something from my dmesg.
A line in dmesg suggested to boot with video.allow_duplicates=1, but had no effect.

Re: Kernel 3.13-0.towo-siduction
platform microcode is the intel-microcode package, but this doesn't make any difference. I'm rather concerned about the display-manager unit.
Just to be clear: this only happens with the latest 3.13-0?
Gentlemen, please dist-upgrade regularly in the next days, I feel that there's a fix on the way. I just wonder why Pids and I don't have this problem.

Re: Kernel 3.13-0.towo-siduction
I'll keep updating daily.
dmesg here
Thanks pids. I don't see anything terribly obvious. Graphics card is Intel Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller. AFAICT, udev happens first.

Yes, bacon, it only happens with 3.13-0. I'm typing this from 3.12-8.
Re: Kernel 3.13-0.towo-siduction
FWIW don't know if this adds anything of value - 13 running nicely here on Bakewell.
Warnings on upgrade about missing ATI firmware but no problems apparent.

Re: Kernel 3.13-0.towo-siduction
The warnings are about the newest (Hawaii) chipsets. Most of us don't have them, yet.

Re: Kernel 3.13-0.towo-siduction
I'll do as bacon suggest and do a daily dist-upgrade to see if something gets fixed.
Re: Kernel 3.13-0.towo-siduction
It works for me, but there are others that seem to have the same problem, booting into a dark screen, as you can see by by googling for "linux kernel 3.13 black screen" and limiting the search to last week.
Connected. Take this REPL, brother, and may it serve you well.

Re: Kernel 3.13-0.towo-siduction
It's interesting really. We can rule out systemd/sysvinit, also udev, and it seems it happens to some PAE and some non-PAE installations. I have tried to break my 3.13 by adding and removing stuff from the bootchain (sysvinit/systemd packages), also down- and upgrading udev, and "unfortunately" cannot reproduce anything. Tomorrow I will make a new installation on another PC and upgrade it stepwise via 3.12-8 to 3.13-0.
If somebody has time, he/she can check the kernel.org mailing list to see what changes have been introduced in 3.13. Also, there are the release candidates for the 3.13 kernel in the repos, so if anybody wants to try those, go ahead! Finally, just for kicks once more, try the slh kernel from aptosid or the newest liquorix.
That's all for now :) Have a good day everybody and thanks for the report!

Could it be something related to video card? Like dkeg, I too have an Intel card.

Re: Kernel 3.13-0.towo-siduction
Here's what's new in 3.13. I don't see anything obvious. I also have intel graphics, but again a different device.

Guys can you (just for kicks) try kernel 3.13-rc7 or -rc8? They should still be in the siduction repos (bacon already mentioned this).

Question: do you guys (who experience the black screen) have hplip installed? If yes, in version >3.8?
