Re: Jazz
^ Oh yes. How great.
Re: Jazz
There is also Grachan Moncur III that deserves some attention.

I think I discovered his New Africa when I was looking for Spiritual Jazz, a sub-genre of Jazz to which I usually return when I am alone, need to relax, think and forget about stress.

I already posted the masterpiece Out To Lunch, but Eric Dolphy demands more attention.

Re: Jazz
I already talked about some Coltrane, but never about his dear Alice. Spiritual jazz? Call it whatever you prefer.

Re: Jazz
Ok, time for some Jazz today.
The saxophone, I love it. Listen to the drums and percussion, fantastic. Of course there are also great performances by Gillespie. I like the modern sound.

Re: Jazz
My learning of jazz history will never end. Just discovered Sonny Simmons.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6F9a8Dth_vc
He was there on the notes of some Dolphy records, just me not paying enough attention.

Leo, from Coltrane's LIVE IN JAPAN https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5ldzusVBng
It took me years to come to love this kind of relentless, spiritual, free jazz. Late Trane career is usually a matter of love or hate. Mostly hate, at least from the people around me and from talents like Miles Davis.
Trane was looking for "something". He never stopped looking for it. He, and other brave musicians (Ayler, Dolphy...), pushed and stretched the jazz idiom in so many ways.
No wonder after the New Thing challenge, jazz went back to something more regular. Hard to get beyond stuff like this.

Re: Jazz
Let me just drop three records I felt in love with in the last couple of days.
David Murray - Flowers For Albert https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZr7g8tJ3yo (for Albert Ayler, of course)
Jazz embracing different sounds and cultures:
Egberto Gismonti - Sol De Meio Dia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUy7UpLTKEQ
Hermeto Pascoal - Slaves Mass https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ptOJ33u1bQ
I love it when jazz musicians open up to many influences and try to expand their solutions.

Re: Jazz
While more "just because it CAN be done" than seriously enjoyable music, Coltrane's 'Blue Train' solo note for note...on a fucking recorder. -_-

Reading about free jazz, it is impossible not to take John Tchicai into consideration. Suffice it to say he played with Coltrane, Shepp and Cherry.

People think Joni Mitchell is a folky. They forget "Hejira" (1976) -- probably my favorite Mitchell album -- JM, Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorius, Michael Brecker.
