Re: show us your iron
snaffled a mobo from this machine £50, I think that wasn't too bad:
http://www.cnet.com/products/acer-x3950-ur30p/specs/
just the mobo, PSU, quad-core cpu and 3G of RAM. pretty snappy, really shows up the current spinning rust HDD I plugged in.
Installed ubuntuMATE on an old box ages ago, was OK not enough RAM for the kids though, so this is the upgrade.
Love linux for the fact it just ran on it after plugging in the old HDD, although I understand win10 does that.
I put it in the giant alienware box shown on previous posts. could probably fit another couple of boards and my pi-NAS in there as well.
Thats actually not a bad idea...

Re: show us your iron
Wife's old Toshy satellite started making pretty grim fan noises, so we got a chromebook!
Lenovo N22 Very nice, only £99 small and light, she only does google docs the FB and emails, I'd got fed up of carting all our photos around, so google has them now (although I might do a backup someday) got the printer set up so all happy and lovely.

^ looks like a toy, but wife is well pleased with it, integrated with the RPi printer server quite well, with a chrome extension.

Re: show us your iron
Bought a half dead Samsung NP-900X3C recently (around a month ago) for a very small amount of money. Mainboard is corroded in all places, usb ports and the keyboard are dead, so i take it upon myself to fix this shit.
Bought a cheap ass replacement keyboard from China. Problem is like anything you buy from aliexp*ess it won't fit the chasis, so i have to cut it myself. I put the original samsung keyboard on top of it as a comparison. You can see i messed up a bit ( or a lot ) during the process.
It was all kawaii and sweet for a couple of days until tonight the thing suddenly died. I suspect the mainboard is acting up / bad soldering / i shorted something lol. Fun times ahead.

Nice specs. I think it will the most powerful machine on the grill.
Now just remove Unity and everything will be alight. ;)

Re: show us your iron
GP: Great machine! I bought the older one (2016 model) last year, very sharp display, great battery, just one flaw.... I had to return it to Dell though since there's a super loud buzzing noise coming out of the top part of the chasis, occurs often in Linux and only sparingly in Windows. I take it the new model didn't have the same flaw?
rice no more.
Re: show us your iron
Very fancy. I have i7 envy -- not to mention the SSD. My largest SSD is "only" 120G.

^^^ No noise here, everything good.
Re: show us your iron
Got a new test machine. i5-3470, 4G memory. It came with a 250G hard drive, but I pulled the 120G SSD out of my core2quad and put it in the i5. Arch booted with no problems, and all I had to do with CRUX was change the ethernet driver in the kernel. It builds a kernel in 2-1/2 minutes (the core2quad took 4 minutes).
Not a great picture, but this is the test table right now -- from the left: core2duo, i5, core2quad, and atom (I swap out the last machine with a couple of others, and have a kvm switch so I can use one keyboard and monitor for all four):
i5 running CRUX:
I love these hp enterprise machines (the two on the left). The new machine is also much quieter than my core2quad (Dell Vostro).

^ Nice set of machines there. You also reminded me I can use the old Inspiron for some tests now.

Re: show us your iron
^^ cool, nice set, in height order too :P
Re: show us your iron
I am trying to decide what I want to do with that Lenovo Atom machine. I bought it because it was a cheap low-power machine, intending to use it as an NFS server. I am still using an even older P4 as NFS server right now, and don't really need another server, so I haven't done much with the Lenovo. I am playing with Alpine on it now, and have it working pretty well, but I don't know if I want to keep using it that way. Oh well, all part of the experiments.
