Bridesmaids
Last night I felt swamped by the first day back to work, so I wanted something light to end the day easily and I picked something randomly. This film didn't really work for me, though, or to be more precise I found the combination of sour moments and comedy unbalanced, with too-long "funny" sequences used, I guess, to out-smart the viewer. It's hard to be funny and smart at the same time, and if you also aim for the romance, well, you have to be careful.

Bangla
The first time I kind of hated this and walked out. Last night I found it pleasant enough for a beer on the couch. Hard to get the irony if you're not familiar with the situation in Italian and in Rome specifically, but still, light-hearted enough to make you smile.

No Sudden Move
For a man with a career as rich as Soderbergh this is another hit.

While preparing for Benedetta, I re-watched The Fourth Man last night. I think it's my favourite of Verhoeven's European output before he moved to the US.

^ Do not expect a masterpiece, but I find the sheer willingness he has to try something different every time fascinating.
Granted, he won't be my favourite director any time soon: as much as I like some of his works, I hate some of the others.

The Beach House
Another spin of Carpenter? Most definitely, but I still feel that when it comes to our innermost fears and our basic ignorance about the complexities of our minds and those of Nature horror is the only genre that does it for me.

Monster - Humanoids From The Deep
I hadn't seen it in ages, but yeah, a supreme sleaze-fest with that Corman-esque punch we miss so much these days. And that finale, come on. They just don't make 'em like this any more. All we get is James Gunn's cynicism today, damn.

Pandora and the Flying Dutchman
One of those technicolor marvels that grab me for two hours and don't even try to let me go until the very last shot.

Ultras
To understand this, beside the subtitles (I needed them as well, I am not from Naples), you have to be a bit familiar with how Italians live football matches. Not every Italian lives them like this, but if you know what hooligans do elsewhere you may get a sense of what's going on here. It's good to know something like this was backed by Netflix, because the man behind the camera is doing some interesting things for Italian music.

"Border" original title "Gräns". A cool film about real trolls.

Christine
Carpenter's magic still works.
Il Sorpasso
Now, if you look at the English title (The Easy Life) you may think this is something along the lines of Fellini's. Well, it is not, but it's a masterpiece of Italian cinema in that it captures everything we are, the good things and the bad things.

Italian Race
Again, the English title doesn't convey what this film is really about. A warm and gentle coming of age, family drama in an Italian region where racing is pretty much a religion. I had to get past some stiff acting (the younger actors) and some overacting (the old ones), but considering that this is Rovere's first film overall it's a nice watch.

So we watched the Maze Runner trio of films.
I'm not sure I would recommend them as such. A slightly interesting world I suppose.
So many fucking plot holes and just "why is that happening? Why don't they.. oh yeah he (the expendable character) is dead now, yup." events though. Couple of minor twists over the trilogy, nothing much you won't see coming a film before though.
Nice to see a British actor not put on a stupid american accent though and call the lead a 'twat' which is sorely lacking IMHO.

According to the press, this won great things everywhere around the world. According to me, are you serious?

Cliff Walkers
Propaganda disguised as a historical thriller or the other way around? Well, it's still good (not great) cinema to me.

The Empty Man
Many hate it, some love it, I fall somewhere in the middle: it kept me there till the end but I didn't leave kissing my toenails in fervent joy.
One Second
Everything Cliff Walkers is not. One of the best films I've seen this year.

The Voyeurs
Erotic thriller as sleazy as it is silly? Yes, please, I'm in. Did it make me want to re-watch Sliver? Yes, it did.
